RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 7
Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Lakeland 0
Mason Eyer’s rebound goal in the 29th minute stood up as the Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team knocked off Lakeland 1-0 Thursday in a battle of Great Northern Conference unbeatens at Mike Webster Stadium.
Eyer scored as the ball caromed around in the box following a Will Quinn free kick. From there, the Hodags buckled down defensively and withstood a number of quality looks from the T-Birds in the second half.
Lakeland outshot Rhinelander 24-12 in the match, team stats credited Rhinelander keeper Barak Rappley with 20 saves in a shutout win.
Rhinelander (4-1-0, 3-0-0-0 Great Northern) will face Ashland and Shawano in an invite Saturday at Mike Webster.
Volleyball: Lakeland 3, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School volleyball team could not hold on to early leads in the first and third sets as it was swept by Lakeland 25-19, 25-8, 25-15 in Great Northern Conference play Thursday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Kelsi Beran had three kills for Rhinelander, Lucy Lindner had four assists and 13 digs, Libbey Buchmann and nine digs and a pair of blocks and Macey Schmoeger chipped in a pair of service aces.
Rhinelander (7-5, 0-2 Great Northern) travels to Ashland for an invite on Saturday.
Girls’ tennis: Wausau Newman 4, Rhinelander 3
A pair of three-set losses in doubles proved to be the difference Thursday as the RHS girls’ tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to conference-leading Wausau Newman at the RHS tennis courts.
The Hodags had 4-1 leads in the third sets of both No. 2 and 3 doubles, but ended up dropping both matches. Kayla Tessmann and Karmen Lopez prevailed in a three-setter at No. 1 doubles for Rhinelander. The Hodags also got straight-set wins from Tori Riopel at No. 1 singles and Shayla Coppenger at No. 3 singles.
Rhinelander (10-11, 3-1 Great Northern) travels to Wausau Friday to begin a two-day invite.
Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 134, Medford 36
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won all 11 events again on Thursday as it defeated Medford 134-36 in a Great Northern Conference dual meet in Medford.
Abi Winnicki, Karis Francis and Celia Francis were all four-event winners on the night for Rhinelander. In addition to each being on two winning relays, Winnicki took the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke, Karis Francis won the 50 and 500 freestyle and Celia Francis won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Emma Houg added a win in the 200 freestyle and Lily Thorsen won the 200 individual medley. In all eight different swimmers played a role in at least one victory for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (2-0 Great Northern) will host the annual Hodag Relays Saturday at the Heck Family Community Pool.
