RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Sept. 5
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 4, Medford 3
The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team fought off a pesky Medford team on Tuesday to win 4-3 and improve to 3-0 in the Great Northern Conference.
The Hodags controlled the top three singles flights with Tori Riopel, Dawsyn Barkus and Shayla Coppenger picking up straight-set wins. Rhinelander’s Evelyn Sawyer and Brooke Sisel picked up what proved to be the clinching point at No. 2 doubles.
Rhinelander (10-10, 3-0 Great Northern) moved into a tie for second in the conference with the win. The Hodags sit six points behind GNC-leading Wausau Newman heading into a matchup with the Cardinals at home Thursday.
Cross country: RHS boys 3rd/14, girls 4th/13, Marshfield Invite
The RHS cross country team finished in the top third of the field on Tuesday in the Marshfield Invite. The Hodags boys took third out of 14 qualifying team while the Hodag girls were fourth in a field of 13.
Junior Greyson Gremban once again paced the Hodag boys, taking fourth overall in the field with a 5-kilometer time of 17 minutes, 42.7 seconds. Brody Kowieski (22nd), Gavin Denis (23rd), Avrom Barr (38th) and Jackson Weinzatl (43rd) rounded out Rhinelander’s top five as the Hodags won the large-school division in the meet.
Senior Leah Jamison was Rhinelander’s top runner on the girls’ side for a third straight race, coming home 15th overall (22:54.9). Sophie Miljevich (24th), Kara Monk (33rd), Luna Grage (35th) and Ella Miljevich (36th) rounded out the Hodags’ top five.
Rhinelander will compete in the Colby Invite on Saturday.
