RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Oct. 19

Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 2, Waupaca 1

Will Gretzinger’s header goal in the 64th minute Thursday night proved to be the difference as Rhinelander got past Waupaca 2-1 in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal game in Waupaca. 

The Hodags won the game despite being outshot 19-8 overall by the Comets. Ricky Tesch was credited with a goal for Waupaca on a ball that caromed around in the Hodag box off a corner kick in the 20th minute, but Rhinelander answered on a similar play in the 29th minute, with freshman Asher Rivord poking in a rebound. 

Barak Rappley made six saves in the win for Rhinelander.

The Hodags (9-4-3) advance to face top-seeded Mosinee Saturday night in a regional final in Mosinee.
