RHS sports recap: Friday, Oct. 20
Football: Onalaska 56, Rhinelander 6
The Rhinelander High School football team fell behind early and never recovered as it lost at Onalaska 56-6 in Level 1 of the WIAA Division 3 playoffs on Friday.
The Hilltoppers scored twice in the first three minutes as part of a 27-point first quarter and led Rhinelander 49-0 at the half.
Landon Bates scored Rhinelander’s lone touchdown and finished the night as the game’s leading rusher with 69 yards on nine carries. Truman Lamers threw for 90 yards on 5 of 11 passing with two interceptions. Zach Germain caught two passes for 63 yards.
Onalaska’s Adam Skifton passed for 213 yards and four scores, bring his state-leading total to 30 touchdown passes on the season. Carter Gilhausen had two catches for 80 yards and two scores while Brady Kuhn rushed for 68 yards and two scores.
Rhinelander finishes with a 5-5 record.
Girls’ swim: Rhinelander 1st/8, GNC Meet
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team had a dominant night, winning nine events and setting five GNC records as it rolled to its fifth consecutive conference title in Antigo.
Abi Winnicki set conference records in all four events she swam, winning the 200-meter individual medley and the 400-meter freestyle individually while being part of the Hodags’ winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Karis Francis set a conference record in the 100 breaststroke, won the 200 freestyle and was also on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Celia Francis added a conference title in the 100 backstroke, Vivian Lamers won the 100 freestyle. Lily Thorsen, Ellyse Younker and Millie Gruett were also on winning relays.
The Hodags are off until the WIAA Division 2 sectional meet Nov. 4 in Merrill.
