Martin Haavisto, 91, passed away peacefully at home Oct. 11, 2023. He was born on Oct. 29, 1931, to Lydia (Jurmu) and Valentine Haavisto, at home in Wakefield, Michigan.
Martin was a loving husband, dad, grandpa and “old” grandpa for his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce and daughter Ruth Cole.
He is survived by daughter Caryn (Alan) Ruetten, their children Melissa Ruetten (Thomas Tran), Phoenix. Ariz., Krysta Ruetten, Phoenix, Ariz., Kelley Ruetten (Tobie Speleman) Antwerp, Belgium, and Andrew Ruetten, Houston, Texas; Ken Cole, Marathon City, and his children Greg (Lindsay) Cole, Mosinee, Sheree (Tim) Knauf, Hanover Park, Ill., Melanie (Zack) Switlick, Wausau.
Martin also enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren Gavin, Landon, and Lydia Cole, Noah, Theo and Max Tran and Dayne, Aiden and Mack Switlick grow up.
Martin and Joyce chose to work and raise their family in Colby. Both worked at the high school. Martin was a man of true integrity who touched many lives. His impact will be felt by his family, friends and those who loved him for a long time. We were lucky to know someone that makes saying goodbye so hard.
A private celebration of life is planned for a later date. As Martin was a lifelong learner and teacher any memorials can be sent to the Colby Community Library, Colby.
Arrangements by Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home, Eagle River. Online condolences may be expressed at gaffney-busha.com.
