School district, law enforcement to discuss safety procedures after student is struck by car
By River News Staff
No citations will be issued in connection with an incident last Tuesday morning where a vehicle struck a Central Elementary School student who was walking to school. However, school district and law enforcement officials are planning to meet this week to discuss ways to ensure walking to school is as safe as possible.
“We are very sorry it happened,” district superintendent Eric Burke said in a statement. “I have asked the Chief for details and we will talk next week to find out more and talk about ideas to make walking to schools as safe as possible.”
According to the Rhinelander Police Department, the collision took place at approximately 7:29 a.m. Tuesday and the child’s foot/ankle were injured. The child was taken to the emergency room via private vehicle, Chief Lloyd Gauthier added.
“The child was observed by three witnesses to ‘dart’ out into traffic without looking,” Gauthier stated.
The River News has requested a copy of the accident report. It is expected to be available next week, according to the police department.
