Breaking the Ice

The Rhinelander Ice Association hosted more than 180 peewee (U12) and squirt (U10) level players for the third annual IceBreaker Tournament Oct. 6-8. Players from around the state and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan were divided into teams for the 5-on-5 tournament. Pictured, two teams square off in a Peewee-level game Sunday, Oct. 8. The tournament continues this weekend with mite (U8) and bantam (U14) level players playing Friday through Sunday.

Subvarsity football

The Rhinelander High School JV and JV2 football teams took on Merrill at Mike Webster Stadium in the past week. The Hodag JVs defeated the Bluejays 22-14 on Monday night, while the JV2s fell to Merrill 25-8 on Oct. 5.

JWMS cross country closes out season

The James Williams Middle School cross country team closed out its 2023 season with three races over eight days, wrapping up on Tuesday. 

The JWMS girls were third at both the Northland Pines Invite Oct. 3 in Eagle River and the Tomahawk Invite Oct. 5 before taking seventh of 11 at the Wisconsin Valley Conference meet Tuesday in Plover. The Hodag boys were fifth at Northland Pines and Tomahawk, and eighth of 11 in Plover.

Teagan Clark (fourth), Noella Tulowitzky (10th), Quinn Stinebrink (13th), Harmony Gomez (18th) and Olivia Eades (22nd) made up the Hodag girls’ top five in Eagle River. Clark (fourth), Tulowitzky (seventh), Stinebrink (13th), Gomez (20th) and Noelle Mayo (21st) were the top five in Tomahawk. Clark (13th), Tulowitzky (32nd), Stinebrink (53rd), Eades (60th) and Gomez (70th) were the top five in Plover.

Michael Brunette (11th), Max Cahee (26th), Chasin Wallmow (29th), Juan Diego Grage (31st) and Wyatt Crowell (42nd) were the top five for the JWMS boys in Eagle River. Brunette (ninth), Crowell (17th), Grage (27th), Wallmow (29th) and Cahee (30th) paced the Hodags in Tomahawk.  Brunette (28th), Crowell (79th), Cahee (90th), Grage (121st) and Jack Congdon (134th) were the Hodags’ top five in Plover.
