RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Oct. 12
Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 2, Northland Pines 1
For the second time this season, Matthew King netted the game winner as Rhinelander defeated Northland Pines by a goal. It was a 2-1 decision this time around Thursday night at Mike Webster Stadium.
King’s shot from 12 yards in the 52nd minute broke a 1-1 tie. Will Quinn had scored for the Hodags in the 15th minute, which was canceled out by an AJ Muench tally for the Eagles in the 35th minute.
The Hodags finished with a 25-9 edge in shots. Barak Rappley made three saves in the win.
Rhinelander (8-4-3, 6-3-0-1 Great Northern) will open WIAA tournament play at Waupaca next Thursday.
Volleyball: Crandon 3, Rhinelander 2
The RHS volleyball team could not hold on to a match lead Thursday night as it fell in five sets to Crandon in its regular season finale 25-16, 25-27, 16-25, 25-21, 15-5 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Lily Treder had 12 kills to lead the Hodags while Lexi Robinson added seven. Ava Krouze had 12 assists, Lucy Lindner had four aces and Emma Chiamulera had 20 digs.
Rhinelander (13-23, 1-11 Great Northern) will open WIAA tournament play at Tomahawk on Tuesday.
Girls’ tennis: WIAA state tournament
Rhinelander High School senior Tori Riopel was defeated in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, by Muskego’s Emily Pan in the first round of the WIAA state tournament in Madison on Thursday.
Pan, last year’s state runner-up, was upset in the second round later in the day on Thursday.
Riopel ended her senior season with a 24-13 overall record, including a 23-13 mark at No. 1 singles.
Girls’ swimming: Antigo at Rhinelander, ppd.
Thursday’s scheduled GNC dual meet between Rhinelander and Antigo was postponed due to an emergency maintenance issue that forced an temporary closure of the Heck Family Community Pool.
RHS activities director Brian Paulson said the school is optimistic the issue will be resolved as early as Friday afternoon and the meet has been rescheduled for this coming Monday.
It’s the final dual meet of the season for the Hodags, who are looking to finish undefeated in Great Northern Conference play.
