RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Oct. 3


Boys’ soccer: Lakeland 3, Rhinelander 0


Rhinelander’s Great Northern Conference title hopes in boys’ soccer took a hit Tuesday night as Lakeland scored three goals after halftime and defeated the Hodags 3-0 in Minocqua.


Cameron Bernard scored on a breakaway in the 46th minute to get things started for Lakeland and Oren Slemmons put home a rebound off a Bernard point-blank chance in the 48th minute. Yaroslav Myshchyshyn converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute.


Lakeland outshot Rhinelander 28-12 in the match. Barak Rappley made seven saves in the loss for the Hodags.


Rhinelander (6-3-3, 5-2-0-1 Great Northern) travels to Mosinee on Thursday.


Volleyball: Tomahawk 3, Rhinelander 1


Rhinelander’s comeback bid came up short on Tuesday as the Hodags forced a fourth set, but not a fifth in a 27-25, 25-18. 23-25, 25-21 loss to Tomahawk in a GNC volleyball match at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


Kesli Beran and Lily Treder each had nine kills for Rhinelander, while Beran added four total blocks. Lucy Lindner had 21 assists and 20 digs while Libbey Buchmann had a team-high 25 digs.


Rhinelander (13-18, 1-7 Great Northern) will be in Tomahawk Saturday for the second round of the Great Northern Conference tournament.


Cross country: RHS boys 1st/6, RHS girls 1st/6, Northland Pines Invite


The Hodag cross country team made it a clean sweep of the boys’ and girls’ titles at the Northland Pines Invite in Eagle River on Tuesday.


Greyson Gremban paced the Hodag boys, taking third (17:38.8) on the day. Avrom Barr finished seventh, Gavin Denis was 11th, Jackson Weinzatl took 14th and Augustus Porter finished 20th in his debut race for the Hodags, who edged Northland Pines by three points for the team title. 


The Hodags girls won by 31 points, thanks in large part to five runners in the top 10. Leah Jamison (22:12.6) came home third, followed by Sophie Miljevich in sixth, Luna Grage in seventh, Hayley Schiek in eighth and Kara Monk in 10th.


Rhinelander will be back in action Saturday at the Hatchet Invite in Tomahawk.
