Girls’ basketball: D.C. Everest 66, Rhineander 62, OT
The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team was unable to hold a 10-point second-half lead Saturday night and fell to D.C. Everest in overtime, 66-62 on the road.
Aubryn Clark put the Hodags up 59-58 on a jumper with 1:05 left in regulation, but a turnover with 39.4 seconds left set up D.C. Everest for the tie on a free throw by Megan Zemke with 18.5 seconds to go.
Kirsten Hall scored 36 for D.C. Everest including all seven Evergreen points in overtime. Clark finished with 30 for the Hodags, who never led in the extra session.
Rhinelander (2-2, 0-0 Great Northern) opens conference play at Medford on Tuesday.
Boys’ hockey: Rhinelander 4, St. Paul Johnson (Minn.) 1
The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team bounced back on Saturday, defeating St. Paul Johnson 4-1 in the final game of the Amery Holiday tournament.
The Hodags led 1-0 after a period on a Dalton Fritz goal. Van Tulowitzky, Joey Belanger and Karter Massey all scored in the second as the Hodags took a 4-0 advantage.
St. Paul Johnson outshot Rhinelander 29-24, but could only muster a goal midway through the third period. Tyler Kimmerling made 28 stops in the win for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (2-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) opens conference play at Tomahawk on Thursday.
