RHS Sports recap: Friday, Nov. 24

Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 69, Athens 57

Just two games after setting it, the Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team re-wrote the program record for most 3-pointers in a game. The Hodags hit 16 on Friday and defeated Athens 69-57 at the Tom Kislow Memorial tournament at D.C. Everest.

The 16th 3, a make by Lily Treder, broke the record of 15 set in an season-opening win over Crandon and put Rhinelander up 65-54 with roughly 6 1/2 minutes to play after the Bluejays had cut Rhinelander’s lead to one earlier in the half. Treder and Aubryn Clark both hit six 3s for Rhinelander, scoring 18 and 24 points, respectively. Morgan Van Zile chipped in 11 for the Hodags.

Sophia Coker paced Athens with 26.

Rhinelander (2-1, 0-0 Great Northern) takes on D.C. Everest Saturday evening to close out the tournament.

Boys’ hockey: Amery 12, Rhinelander 1

The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team could not keep up with host Amery in the first game of a holiday weekend tournament, falling to the Warriors 12-1 on Friday night.

Amery scored three times in the first, six in the second and three more in the third. The Hodags’ lone tally was a Gavin Denis power play goal late in the first period.

Rhinelander was outshot 40-21 for the game. Tyler Kimmerling made 17 saves and Asher Rivord made 11 for the Hodags in the loss.

Rhinelander (1-1-0, 0-0-0-0) faces St. Paul Johnson (Minn.) Saturday to round out the tournament.

Due to an early holiday deadline, full reports will appear in the Friday, Dec. 1 edition of the River News.
