Hodag grad DeNamur earns NCAA All-Region honors in cross country
Alison DeNamur, a 2021 graduate of Rhinelander High School, earned NCAA Division-III All-Region honors last Saturday, securing a 27th-place finish in the NCAA North Regional meet, hosted by UW-Eau Claire.
DeNamur, a junior for the Ripon College women’s cross country team, completed the six-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 34.6 seconds. The top 35 in the race earned all-region honors.
DeNamur was the individual runner-up in the Midwest Conference Championships last month in Iowa, recording her fourth top-five finish of the 2023 season.
DeNamur was Rhinelander’s top runner in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, she scored three top 10 finishes in eight races that year, taking 16th at the Great Northern Conference Meet and 21st at WIAA subsectionals. She also earned All-Midwest Conference honors in 2022, with a third-place run at the conference championships.
Final Learn to Curl session of fall set for Sunday
The Rhinelander Ice Arena, located at 2021 E Timber Drive in Rhinelander, will host its final “Learn To Curl” session of the fall at 2 p.m. this Sunday, Nov. 19.
This learn to curl is open to all ages and abilities. You will learn to slide out of the “hack” (starting block), release a stone, sweep the stone down the ice, strategy and scoring, curling etiquette and the history of the game.Participants will need to bring clean tennis shoes to change into and wear on the ice, and dress in comfortable warm clothing and gloves. Kids under 12 need to bring a helmet.
Seniors or others who find sliding difficult will be taught how to deliver a stone using a push stick.
Afterward, the group will retire to the warming room where it will “broom stack,” enjoying beverages and snacks.
