Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 1st/14, WIAA D2 sectionals
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team had a dominant day in the pool on Saturday, winning all 11 swimming events and cruising to its fifth straight WIAA Division 2 sectional title in Merrill.
Rhinelander piled up 19 overall state qualifying bids on the day out of its 21 total entries. In addition to all three relays, the Hodags picked up automatic state bids with sectional titles from Abi Winnicki in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle; Celia Francis in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke; Karis Francis in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke; Vivian Lamers in the 50 freestyle and Emma Houg in the 500 freestyle.
Additionally, the Hodags received eight at-large bids with times among the 16 fastest in the state. Also moving on are Ellyse Younker (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly), Lily Thorsen (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke), Millie Gruett (100 butterfly), Lamers (100 freestyle), June Chiamulera (100 freestyle) and Ella Heck (100 breaststroke).
The WIAA D2 state meet takes place this coming Friday night in Waukesha.
