Hodag HOF coach Bob Smith passes away

Bob Smith, a successful three-sport coach at Rhinelander Union High School in the 1960s and member of the Hodag Hall of Fame, passed away in April in Hudson at the age of 86, according to an obituary provided to the River News Sports department.

Smith coached tennis and cross country at Rhinelander during his tenure from 1961-1968, but is most known for being the architect of the strong RHS boys' swim teams of the 1960s. Smith's Hodags were WIAA state runners-up for five consecutive years from 1964 to 1968.

Smith also led the Hodag boys' tennis team to a runner-up finish in the WIAA state tournament in 1967 and directed the Hodag boys' cross country teams to Wisconsin Valley Conference titles in 1962 and 1966.

After his time at Rhinelander, Smith coached men's swimming and tennis at UW-Stout an led the Blue Devils to five straight tennis conference titles.

The obituary states Smith is survived by his wife of 62 years, Penny, three children, eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.
