RHS sports recap: Thursday, May 25
The Rhinelander High School baseball team avenged a pair of regular season losses and moved on in the WIAA playoffs on Thursday, defeating Antigo 5-3 at Kretz Bros. Park.
Owen Kurtz broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the fifth inning and the Hodags tack on an insurance run in the seventh on a James Heck RBI groundout. Heck then wiggled out a bases-loaded jam with one out in the seventh, striking out the final two batters, to earn the save.
Max Ratty got the win, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. Seth Nofftz finished 2 for 3 on the day for Rhinelander, which benefitted from seven Antigo errors in the contest.
Rhinelander (8-13, 4-8 Great Northern) will face second-seeded Medford in the regional semifinals on the road Tuesday.
