RHS sports recap: Wednesday, May 24
Joey Belanger and Layne Roeser are state-bound for the Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team.
The Hodags' No. 1 doubles tandem went 2-1 on Wednesday and took third place in a WIAA Division 1 sectional in Eau Claire.
The two became Rhinelander's first state qualifiers since 2019 thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 over Eau Claire North's Colman Selvig and Jaxon Ruppelt. The team lost in the semifinals before defeating New Richmond's Drew Eckert and Nathan Devereux 6-4, 6-2 in the third-place match.
Overall doubles had a solid day. Leo Losch and Charlie Heck finished second at No. 2 doubles, falling in straight sets to Eau Claire Memorial in the finals with an automatic state berth on the line. Eli Lundt and Dawson Pontell were third at No. 2 doubles.
Dalton Fritz lost his quarterfinal match in straight sets at No. 1 singles against top-seeded Evan Birkholz of Eau Claire Memorial for the right to go to state. Nick Lesch dropped both of his matches and took fourth at No. 4 doubles.
The WIAA D1 state tournament begins next Thursday in Madison.
