Using a quiz show format, the FICB challenges high school students and tests their knowledge about personal finance, business, economics and current events in an atmosphere of friendly competition, according to a school district press release.
Teams from around the state competed in regional tournaments and eventually 30 teams qualified for the finals.
In the seeding round, the Rhinelander team of Jack Antonuk, Michael Bowman, Cody Ruetz and Kaleb Winter defeated Kimberly High School (this was the first time RHS ever beat them) to receive the number 12 seed in the championship bracket.
The Rhinelander team of Charlie Heck, Leo Losch, Carter Gaber and Andrew Henrichs lost on the last question to Onalaska (eventual runner-up in the state) in the seeding round to receive the number 21 seed in the championship bracket.
"As luck would have it, both Rhinelander teams ended up squaring off against each other in the first round of the championship bracket," the release states. "The good news was Rhinelander was guaranteed one team would move on; however, it also meant one of our teams would be eliminated early. Heck, Losch, Gaber, and Henrich's team defeated Antonuk, Bowman, Ruetz and Winter 200-175 in a friendly match to advance to the next round. The advancing RHS team went on to beat Oshkosh North in a nail-biter which was again decided on the last question 150-140. This meant the team made it to the elite eight round and had to face the team that knocked RHS out of the tournament last year - Monroe.
Monroe defeated Rhinelander on the last question just like last year, 180-160.
Madison West won the state title over Onalaska. Monroe and Green Bay Preble were the other two final four teams. Two teams from East Troy battled it out for the consolation championship.
