RHS sports recap: Tuesday, May 23
The Rhinelander High School softball team nearly upset the No. 1 team in Division 2 on Tuesday, but came up just short in a 3-2 loss in nine innings at Medford in the WIAA Regional Quarterfinals.
Finley Arndt singled and scored, beating out a throw to the plate on a grounder to third by Zayleah Leonhardt to win it for the Raiders.
Rhinelander tied the game in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Lily Treder. Laney Haenel drove in a run for the Hodags in the second inning. Kadyn Taylor had two hits as Rhinelander was outhit in the game, 10-6.
Addi DeMeyer took the loss, allowing three runs, all unearned, on 10 hits with 12 strikeouts over eight-plus innings for Rhinelander.
The Hodags finished the year with a 10-14 record.
Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/8, WIAA Regionals
Rhinelander shot 339 on its home course and advanced in the WIAA tournament with a third-place finish in a Division 1 regional Tuesday at Northwood Golf Club.
Brody Kowieski played his final nine holes in even par to shoot 80 on the day and finish in a tie for fourth overall. Blake Petroff and Brody Kowieski each shot 86, Andrew Henrichs carded an 87 and Cooper Radke shot 111.
Sectionals take place next Tuesday at RiverEdge Golf Course in Marshfield.
Baseball: Rhinelander 4, Stratford 3
James Heck hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning as the RHS baseball team rallied to defeat Stratford 4-3 Tuesday in the regular season finale at Stafford Field.
The Hodags scored three times in the sixth inning to take the lead. Rhinelander then worked out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the seventh to preserve the win.
Seth Nofftz added a pair of RBIs for Rhinelander and Cody Everson had two hits. Oscar Hanson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to get the win. Kaden Vanney allowed three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a no decision for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (7-13, 4-8 Great Northern) opens the postseason Thursday at Antigo.
Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 7, Mosinee 3
Ava Lamers recorded a hat trick and Leah Weigel scored twice as the Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team took care of Mosinee 7-3 Thursday night in the regular season finale at Mike Webster Stadium.
The Hodags scored the first three goals before the sides traded goals late in the first half, with Rhinelander taking a 5-2 advantage to the break.
Sophie Miljevich scored for Rhinelander as did Kinzie Arneson as the Hodags outshot Mosinee 35-16. Mya Krouze made six saves in the win for Rhinelander.
The Hodags (12-5-0, 8-2-0 Great Northern) will open the WIAA tournament at home against Medford next Thursday.
