RHS sports recap: Monday, May 22
Wausau East pulled away late on Monday and scored an 8-3 over Rhinelander in non-conference play at Stafford Field.
The Lumberjacks took the lead with a two-run fifth inning and tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth. James Heck took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits over five innings. Owen Kurtz and Seth Nofftz each had two hits and an RBI for Rhinelander.
The Hodag (6-13, 4-8 Great Northern) close out the regular season this afternoon against Stratford.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander T-2nd/7, WIAA Subsectionals
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team advanced five flights through to sectionals on Monday as it tied for second in a WIAA Division 1 subsectional at Wausau West.
The Hodags scored a pair of upsets to advance in singles, as Dalton Fritz advanced out of the No. 1 flight as a five seed and Nick Lesch advanced at No. 4 as a three seed.
Joey Belanger and Layne Roeser received a bye into sectionals as the top seed in a seven-team No. 1 doubles draw. Leo Losch and Charlie Heck, and Eli Lundt and Dawson Pontell parlayed No. 1 seeds into sectional berths in the second and third doubles flights, respectively.
John Currie fell in a match tiebreaker at No. 2 singles in a match against Stevens Point's Marek Woytasik for the right to advance to sectionals. Gavin Denis lost his second round match at No. 3 singles to D.C. Everest's Calvin Gassal.
Sectionals take place Wednesday in Eau Claire.
Track: RHS boys 5th/8, girls 7th/8, WIAA Regionals
The Rhinelander High School track team advanced 16 entries to sectionals on Monday as it took fifth in the boys' division and seventh in the girls' division of a WIAA Division 2 sectional in Colby.
The Hodags had two regional champions. Truman Lamers jumped 6 feet to win the boys' high jump and Aila Bergman came within two tenths of the school record in taking the girls' 300-meter hurdles (47.25 seconds). Bergman also advanced individually with a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles.
Others placing in the top four and moving on were: Greyson Gremban (2nd boys' 3200), Eva Heck (2nd girls' high jump), Kaleb Winter (3rd boys' pole vault), Cody Ruetz (3rd boys' 400), Gussie Gruett (3rd girls' 400), Libbey Buchmann (3rd girls' discus, 4th girls' shot put) and Bo Stott (4th boys' shot put).
Rhinelander also advanced five relays to sectionals. The Hodag girls took second in the 4x400 and were third in the 4x100. The Hodag boys took the fourth and final transfer spot in the 4x800, 4x200 and 4x400.
Sectionals take place Thursday in Arcadia.
