Rhinelander High School grad Brad Comer tied a UW-Stevens Point single-game record on Saturday, collecting eight RBIs in a 20-1 win over Webster University in a NCAA Division III Regional Tournament game in Stevens Point.
Comer homered twice in the game, including a grand slam in the sixth inning of the contest. The senior hit a two-run shot in the first and added a two-run double in the fifth as he finished the day 4-for-5 and a triple short of the cycle.
UWSP defeated Webster again Sunday in the championship of the double-elimination tournament to advance to the Super Regionals.
Eagle River Speedway readies for season opener
Eagle River Speedway staff have been preparing the third-mile, clay oval for its season opening race on Sunday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m.
The season-opening race will host the track's weekly divisions plus a couple of added classes. The track's weekly lineup will include the Chef Rene B-Modifieds, Sweetwater Late Models, Coffen Construction Stock Cars, Eagle River Dock and Lift Street Stocks, Halsey Fab/Dan's Service 300 Micro Sprints and JD's Archery and Paintball 600 Micro Sprints.
The track's defending 2022 track champions include Twin Lakes, Michigan's Jesse Aho (B modified), Eagle River's Jason Zdroik (late model), Eagle River's David Blackberg (stock car), Ontonagon, Michigan's Emerson Manos (street stock), Eagle River's Michael Hicks (600 micro) and Twin Lakes, Michigan's Cooper Aho (300 micro sprint).
The local Pure Stocks and Dairyland Vintage racers will be part of the opening night activities.
Veterans and active military will be admitted into the grandstand free. Spectator gates open at 4:30 p.m. with the first green flag of the '23 season ready to fly at 6:30 p.m. Adult admission is just $12 with seniors 60 and up $10. Youth 6-17 $6 and kids 5 and under free with a paid adult.
After the Memorial Day weekend opener, the track's schedule will return to its regular Tuesday night schedule beginning June 6 with the "School's Out, Vacation Kick Off" night of racing action. On Tuesday nights the racing action begins at 7:30 p.m. with pit gates opening at 4:30 p.m. and the spectator gates opening at 5:30 p.m.

WIAA Board navigates modest May meeting agenda
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control covered an agenda with limited number of action items at its May 19 meeting.
One of the action items addressed by the board was the approval of the fast track non-football conference realignment request submitted by Cedarburg that merges the Classic Eight and North Shore Conferences in boys' hockey, with the exclusion of University School of Milwaukee.
Other action items approved by the board include the 2023 Annual Meeting transcript and the general fund statements and payments for the past four months.
Among the topics reported to the board by the executive staff is a draft of the new competitive balance and co-op timelines, preparations for the upcoming spring tournaments, continued efforts to recruit and retain licensed officials, and the 2023-24 Board of Control meeting dates.
The board received liaison reports from John Ashley of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and Eric Plitzuweit of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.
