RHS sports recap: Thursday, May 18


Softball: Rhinelander 1, Shawano 0

The Rhinelander High School softball team edged Shawano 1-0 Thursday in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal game at Andrea Musson Field.

Lily Treder scored the game's lone run. She led off the second inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Laney Haenel. Treder also had a run-saving catch in centerfield with one out in the seventh inning that kept the tying run on second base.

Addi DeMeyer scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out seven to pick up the shutout win for Rhinelander. Maddi Roeser and Kaden Taylor also collected hits for Rhinelander, which was outhit 6-3 in the contest.

The Hodags (10-13, 5-7 Great Northern) will travel to top-seeded Medford Tuesday in the regional semifinal round.

Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 1st/5, GNC tournament

The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team had a nearly perfect day, winning six of seven flights and taking the Great Northern Conference tournament at Lakeland with ease on Thursday. The result clinched Rhinelander's ninth straight GNC title.

Dalton Fritz won GNC singles player of the year honors. After defeating Lakeland's Dominic Gironella in a match tiebreaker in the semifinals, Fritz handled Medford's Brayden Balciar 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match at No. 1 singles. John Currie won the second flight, Nick Lesch rallied from down a set in the championship match at No. 4 to win the title and Gavin Denis was the runner up at No. 3.

Joey Belanger and Layne Roeser rolled to the No. 1 title and doubles players of the year honors for a second straight year. Leo Losch and Charlie Heck won at No. 2 doubles and Eli Lundt and Dawson Pontell were the champs at No. 3

Rhinelander will next take part in WIAA Division 1 subsections Monday in Wausau.

Baseball: Rhinelander 13, Tomahawk 1

Rhinelander scored six runs in both the second and third innings on Thursday as it got past Tomahawk 13-1 in GNC baseball play Thursday at Stafford Field.

The Hodags took advantage of 11 free bases via walks or bases on balls in the contest. Cody Everson had a two-run single as part of the second inning and Seth Nofftz hit a three-run double in the third.

James Heck had two hits at the plate and struck out nine batters over 4 1/3 innings in the win. Dylan Vanderbunt closed out the game, striking out the final two batters to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Rhinelander (6-11, 4-7 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Saturday.
