ArtStart announces summer exhibition 'Courtroom Sketches' selections from the Joel Hirschhorn Collection
"ArtStart is thrilled to welcome the compelling Courtroom Sketches exhibition to the galleries," a press release announcing the new exhibition states. "To avoid distractions and maintain privacy many jurisdictions do not allow cameras in the courtroom. Because of this the news media rely on the nearly anonymous, highly skilled drawings done by courtroom artists across the country. Today the ubiquity of digital technology and smartphone cameras means nearly everyone is an 'image maker' and 'photographer'. However the camera-less courtroom relies on the analog skill of the singular sketch artist. Mr. Joel Hirschhorn, a prominent criminal defense attorney who in his decades-long career argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and worked on a number of high profile cases, is lending a selection of dynamic courtroom drawings, along with accompanying ephemera and supporting texts, to the summer 2023 exhibition, Courtroom Sketches. The collection follows both the trajectory of his career and the history of some of the biggest criminal cases in American history, including those with ties to Watergate and Colombian drug cartels."
ArtStart galleries are free to the public. Hours are Wednesday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday - Saturday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
