RHS sports recap: Tuesday, May 16
Rhinelander maintained pace in the Great Northern Conference title race with a 3-1 win on the road Tuesday at Northland Pines.
Rhinelander got an early strike from Leah Weigel that was canceled out by a 39th-minute penalty kick by the Eagles. Morgan Van Zile broke the dead lock with a goal in the 59th minute and the Hodags benefitted from an own goal less than two minutes later.
The Hodags outshot the Eagles 32-6 in the match. Mya Krouze stopped four shots in the win.
Rhinelander (11-4-0, 7-1-0 Great Northern) remained a game behind Lakeland, which eked out a 1-0 win at Medford Tuesday, in the GNC race. The Hodags host the T-Birds on Friday.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 6, Marshfield 1
The RHS boys' tennis team wrapped up dual meet play for the season with a convincing 6-1 victory at Marshfield on Tuesday.
The Hodags dominated doubles as the teams of Joey Belanger/Layne Roeser, Leo Losch/Charlie Heck and Eli Lundt/Dawson Pontell combined to drop only one game in straight-set victories.
No. 2 singles player John Currie was not available Tuesday, so everyone else bumped up a flight, with Gavin Denis, Nick Lesch and Max Durkee scoring wins at Nos. 2-4 singles. Denis and Durkee needed match tiebreakers to prevail in their matches.
Rhinelander (17-6, 8-0 Great Northern) will look to lock up a ninth-straight GNC title Thursday in the conference meet at Lakeland.
Track: RHS boys 4th/7, girls 6th/7, GNC Meet
The Hodag boys' track team's reign a top the Great Northern Conference came to an end Tuesday night as it finished fourth in the GNC Outdoor meet at Lakeland. The Hodag girls finished sixth for the second year in a row.
Kaleb Winter scored the lone win for the Hodag boys, taking the pole vault with a jump of 12 feet, 6 inches. Abe Barlog was third in the 110-meter hurdles, Greyson Gremban was third in the 3,200, Shane Petrick took third in the long jump, Truman Lamers was third in the high jump and the Hodags also got all-conference honors with third-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Freshman Aila Bergman set a conference record (47.47 seconds) in winning the 300-meter hurdles. She was also on the conference champion 4x400 team with Reese Gehrig, Luna Grage and Gussie Gruett. Libbey Buchmann was the runner up in shot put and discus. The Hodags took third in the 4x800 and the 4x100.
The Hodags will compete in a WIAA D2 regional at Colby this coming Monday.
Golf: Rhinelander 2nd/7, GNC Meet No. 7
The Hodag golf team battled hard, fast conditions to shoot 343 at Inshalla Country Club and finish runner-up in the final leg of the Great Northern Conference golf meet Tuesday in Tomahawk.
Andrew Henrichs tied for fourth on the day with an 82, Brody Kowieski was sixth with an 83. Sam Schoppe and Blake Petroff each shot 89 and Braden Mork shot 98.
Rhinelander finished third in the final conference standings and had three players earn all-conference honors. Henrichs vaulted into fifth place overall with Tuesday's performance, earning a spot on the conference first-team. Kowieski and Schoppe finished 11th and 14th, respectively and received honorable mention.
The Hodags will host a non-conference invite Friday at Northwood Golf Club.
