RHS sports recap: Friday, May 12


Baseball: Merrill 10, Rhinelander 9

The RHS baseball team had one of its best offensive outputs of the year, but could not hold on to an early 6-0 lead in a 10-9 loss to Merrill at Athletic Park.

Merrill took the lead in a five-run fifth inning. The Hodags got a run back in the sixth and one more in the seventh, but left the tying run at second in the final inning.

The Hodags had nine hits from eight different players in the contest. Owen Kurtz went 2-for-3 and hit a three-run homer in the first inning. Max Ratty went 1-for-4 and drove in three runs.

James Heck took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Dylan Vanderbunt was unable to collect the save, allowing two runs on six hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Rhinelander (4-11, 2-7 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Monday.

Softball: Wausau East 25, Rhinelander 10

The RHS softball team lost a slugfest in its season finale, falling to Wausau East 25-10 in five innings at Andrea Musson Field.

The Hodags trailed 11-9 after three innings, but gave up four runs in the fourth and 10 in the fifth as part of a sloppy defensive game in which the team committed 10 errors and Wausau East pounded out 16 hits.

Rhinelander collected 11 hits in the game including a 3-for-4 afternoon from Lilly Treder. Abigale Johnson was 2-for-4. Laney Haenel gave up 19 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Rhinelander (9-13, 5-7 Great Northern) opens the WIAA tournament at home against Shawano next Tuesday.

Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 7, Antigo 0

The RHS boys' tennis team will have at least a 26-point lead entering the Great Northern Conference tournament after is closed out an undefeated regular season with 7-0 victory over Antigo on the road Friday.

The Robins, as in their match the day before, did not field any doubles teams and the Hodags juggled their singles lineup to get the sweep. John Currie, Leo Losch, Charlie Heck and Nick Lesch all won in straight sets for Rhinelander.

The Hodags (16-6, 8-0 Great Northern) will play their final dual of the season this coming Tuesday at Marshfield

Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/7, GNC Meet No. 5

Rhinelander matched its season-best score, shooting 325 on Friday and finishing third in the fifth leg of the GNC tournament at Eagle River Golf Course.

Andrew Henrichs matches his career-low round of 76 to tie for third place on the afternoon to lead Rhinelander. Body Kowieski shot 78 to tie for fifth and Sam Schoppe shot 81 to tie for 10th. Blake Petroff shot 90 and Braden Mork carded a 91 for the Hodags.

Rhinelander is back in action Saturday at the Merrill Best Ball Invite.
