RHS sports recap: Thursday, May 11
Despite being no-hit by Lakeland pitcher Saylor Timmerman, the Rhinelander High School softball team found a way to squeak out a 1-0 victory over the T-Birds Thursday in Minocqua.
Timmerman faced only one batter over the minimum in the contest, and it proved to be the winning run. Laney Haenel walked in the third inning, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error.
Rhinelander got a three-hit shutout from Addi DeMeyer, who struck out 12 and walked seven in the victory. DeMeyer struck out Lakeland's Moriah Lewis looking with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to end it.
Rhinelander (9-12, 5-7 Great Northern) ends the regular season Friday at home against Wausau East.
Track: RHS boys 1st/11, RHS girls 1st/11, Hodag Invite
The Rhinelander High School boys' and girls' track teams edged out victories in the 10-team Hodag Invite Thursday at Mike Webster Stadium. The Hodag boys beat out Northland Pines by 3 points for the top spot and the Hodag girls came out 5 1/2 points ahead of runner-up Phillips.
The Hodag boys took four events on the night. Jackson Fuss won the 400-meter dash, Greyson Gremban won the 3,200, Kaleb Winter won the pole vault and Truman Lamers won the high jump.
On the girls' side, freshman Aila Bergman claimed both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and Libbey Buchmann scored the win in the discus.
Rhinelander will compete in the GNC Meet Tuesday at Lakeland.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 6, Antigo 1
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team maintained its lead in the GNC standings with a 6-1 victory over Antigo in the Hodag Dome on Thursday.
Dalton Fritz, John Currie and Gavin Fritz scored wins in the top three singles flights. The Hodags won all three doubles matches unopposed.
Rhinelander (15-6, 7-0 Great Northern) faces Antigo again on the road Friday.
