Governor seeks applicants for Oneida County DA
By River News Staff-
In a press release issued Monday, the governor's office announced that applications for the position - which can be found on the "Apply to Serve" page of the governor's website, www.evers.wi.gov - must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 31.
Evers must appoint someone to fill the vacancy created by current district attorney Michael W. Schiek's recent election to the Oneida County Circuit Court.
In April, Schiek defeated Mary Roth Burns who was appointed to the bench last summer to fill the remainder of a term left vacant when Oneida County circuit judge Patrick F. O'Melia retired in August.
Schiek is the third district attorney to be elected to the bench in Oneida County in the last two decades.
O'Melia served as district attorney for 18 years before filling the vacancy left by the retirement of former Oneida County circuit judge Robert E. Kinney.
His successor in the district attorney's office, Michael H. Bloom, was also eventually promoted to the bench after a stint as a prosecutor. He was elected to the seat last held by the late Mark A. Mangerson.
All three men also have private practice experience.
The new Oneida County district attorney will serve until January 2025 at which time the office will be up for election.
Evers is also seeking applicants for district attorney positions in Grant and Vernon counties.
Those vacancies are also the result of the April elections.
For questions about the appointment process, contact the Governor's Office of Legal Counsel at (608) 266-1212.
