The Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team took a team-first approach on Friday against conference back-marker Antigo and had plenty of success.

Ava Lamers scored five times, Sophie Miljevich had four goals and the Hodags romped past the Red Robins 10-0 at Listle Field.

Goals came in bunches for the Hodags (7-3-0, 5-1-0 Great Northern) as they outshot the Robins 52-0. Rhinelander coach Nathan Bates said he stressed a possession game on Friday and said things went according to plan in that regard. Leah Weigel chipped in three assists on the night, Maddie Mathwig had two helpers and the Hodags had assists on eight of their 10 goals.

"The girls did really well tonight," Bates said. "They listened to what we asked about not going out there and trying to do it all themselves, working as a team and that was the favorite thing I saw tonight. They were working together."

Scoreless through the first 10 minutes of the game, Lamers finally kicked things off with an unassisted tally for the Hodags moments into the 12th minute. She scored twice more off assists from Mathwig in the 17th and 29th minutes, while Miljevich scored in the 23rd and 34th minutes as the Hodags took a 5-0 lead to halftime.

Lamers and Miljevich scored 17 seconds apart in the 41st minute as the Hodags opened the second half with a barrage. The Hodags had another spree of three goals by Morgan Van Zile, Miljevich and Lamers 74 seconds apart in the 54th and 55th minutes to round out the scoring.

"It was a lot of through ball and a lot of slotted back passes, stuff like that, give and goes," Bates said. "We talked to the girls before the game and told them we didn't want to see any dribbling through four, five people at all. We wanted it to be done off teamwork and passing and the girls did go out and do that. They listened very well, went out and played as a team and had through balls, crosses, things like that to finish it."

The Hodags put forth 28 shots on goal in the match. Antigo (0-6-0, 0-6-0 Great Northern) did not register a shot. Mya Krouze played all 60 minutes in net for Rhinelander to earn the win.

The win moved Rhinelander back into a first-place tie with Lakeland in the GNC. Both teams have 15 points, however Lakeland has played one fewer conference match than Rhinelander - and has a head-to-head victory over the Hodags - as the GNC season enters its home stretch.

"The girls played their hearts out, played good as a team and were able to put Antigo away pretty quickly," Bates said. "We switched some girls around, moved a couple positions around this evening and tried to do those types of things and work on some stuff before we start off next week against Medford."

Rhinelander is back in action tonight on the road at Medford. The Hodags defeated the Raiders 6-0 in the Hodag Dome last month. The Hodags are scheduled to travel to Marshfield for a non-conference match on Thursday, but Bates said that game might get scratched as the Hodags deal with low numbers in reserve due to injuries.

"We've got a lot of injuries right now. JV, we're pretty much done with that for the season right now," he said.
