RHS sports recap: Friday, May 5
The Rhinelander High School softball team scored seven times in the final three innings to pull away from Tomahawk 9-2 Friday in a GNC contest in the Hodag Dome.
Lily Treder went 2-for-3 in the game and hit a go-ahead double that put Rhinelander up 3-2 in the fifth. Lucy Lindner added two hits and the Hodags got a key pinch-hit RBI double from freshman Kadyn Taylor in the sixth.
Tomahawk scored once in each of the first two innings, but Hodag pitcher Addi DeMeyer settled in from there. She gave up two runs on four hits and had 11 strikeouts in the win.
Tomahawk served as the home team Friday as the game was scheduled to be played in Tomahawk, but moved to Rhinelander due to rain.
The Hodags (8-11, 4-6 Great Northern) host Mosinee on Tuesday.
Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 10, Antigo 0
Ava Lamers scored five times and Sophie Miljevich chipped in four goals as the RHS girls' soccer team breezed past Antigo 10-0 on the road Friday.
Lamers had three goals and Miljevich scored twice as the Hodags led 5-0 at halftime. Both scored again less than a minute into the second half, and scored once more later in the half. Morgan Van Zile also scored as the Hodags ended the game early via the mercy rule.
The Hodags took 52 shots in the game, 28 of which were on goal. Antigo did not register a shot in the contest.
Rhinelander (7-3-0, 5-1-0 Great Northern) travels to Medford on Tuesday.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 7, Pacelli 0
The Hodag boys tennis team jumped back into the Great Northern Conference lead on Friday with a 7-0 victory over Pacelli in the Hodag Dome.
Rhinelander swept all three doubles flights without dropping a game with the teams of Joey Belanger/Layne Roeser, Leo Losch/Charlie Heck and Eli Lundt/Dawson Pontell.
Dalton Fritz, John Currie and Gavin Denis picked up straight-set wins in singles. Nick Lesch won the fourth flight, unopposed.
The win moves Rhinelander (11-6, 4-0 GNC) six points ahead of Medford in the conference standings. Those two teams play a doubleheader Tuesday in Rhinelander.
Track & field: RHS boys 6th/8, girls 6th/7, Gene Noonan Invite
The Rhinelander High School Track team recorded sixth-place finishes in both the boys' and girls' divisions of the Gene Noonan Invitational in Wisconsin Rapids on Friday.
Truman Lamers scored a runner-up finish for the Hodag boys in the triple jump and was third in the high jump. Greyson Gremban was the runner-up in the 3,200 meters, took third in the 1,600 was was on the runner-up 4x800-meter relay team with Olin Slette, Shawn Denis and Cody Ruetz. Ruetz added a third-place finish in the 800.
Freshman Aila Bergman was second in the 100-meter hurdles for the Hodag girls. She also finished third in the 300 hurdles and was on the runner-up 4x400-meter relay squad with Kyleah Hartman, Luna Grage and Gussie Gruett. Juliana Smith finished second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600. Freshman Libbey Buchmann took third in the discus.
Rhinelander will be back in action Tuesday at Tomahawk.
