RHS sports recap: Tuesday, May 2
Sophie Miljevich scored a pair of second half goals to help Rhinelander pull away Tuesday night and the Hodags defeated Mosinee 4-0 in a GNC girls' soccer matchup at Edgewood Park.
Ava Lamers had Rhinelander's lone first half goal, a strike in the 25th minute, to give Rhinelander a 1-0 lead at the break. The Hodags then benefited from an own goal in the 43rd minute, before Miljevich put the game out of reach with tallies in the 67th and 70th minutes.
Rhinelander outshot Mosinee 39-8 in the match. Mya Krouze made five saves in the shutout win for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (6-3-0, 4-1-0 Great Northern) travels to Antigo on Friday.
Softball: Rhinelander 7, Northland Pines 1
Rhinelander took the lead with a four-run fourth inning on Tuesday and pulled away to a 7-1 victory over Northland Pines in a GNC softball contest in the Hodag Dome.
Laney Haenel broke a 1-all tie with an RBI single in the fourth and the Hodags got a three-run double from Abigale Johnson in the inning. The Hodags tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Addi DeMeyer struck out 11 and gave up only two hits in a complete-game win for the Hodags. Trecer and Lucy Lindner each had two hits for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (7-11, 3-6 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Friday.
Boys' tennis: Stevens Point 4, Rhinelander 3
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team lost to Wisconsin Valley Conference-leading Stevens Point 4-3 on the road Tuesday afternoon.
Rhinelander won two of the three doubles matches. Joey Belanger and Layne Roeser prevailed 13-11 in a second-set tiebreaker to take a straight-set win at No. 1 doubles. Charlie Heck and Leo Losch one a first-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles en route to a straight-set win. John Currie picked up Rhinelander's lone win in singles, cruising to a straight-set win in the second flight.
Rhinelander (10-6, 3-0 Great Northern) hosts Pacelli on Thursday.
Golf: Rhinelander T-2nd/9, Marathon Invite
The Hodag golf team shot 354 in breezy conditions Tuesday to tie for second out of nine teams in the non-conference Marathon Invite at Pine Valley Golf Course.
Rhinelander finished five strokes behind GNC rival Medford for the win on the day and tied for second with Mosinee. Sam Schoppe shot an 8-over 79 to tie for second on the day, two strokes out of first place, to lead the Hodags. Brody Kowieski shot 90, Andrew Henrichs carded a 91, Blake Petroff shot 94 and Braden Mork shot 105.
With Thursday's GNC round at Eagle River Golf Course postponed until May 12, Rhinelander's next meet is at home May 8 as it hosts the third leg of the GNC tournament.
