Schuman charged with bail jumping after DNA found on firearm
By River News Staff-
Frank R. Schuman made his initial appearance Thursday on a single count of felony bail jumping filed April 24.
Schuman appeared from the Vilas County jail where he is being held on a $15,000 cash bond related to a separate felony charge of substantial battery. Schuman also has a pending second-degree sexual assault case in Outagamie County. He is scheduled to make an appearance in that case on June 6, according to online court records.
In the new bail jumping case, Oneida County assistant district attorney Jillian Pfeifer explained that police located a firearm in Forest County back in January that tested positive for Schuman's DNA. According to the complaint, the DNA was found on the grip of the weapon - a loaded Sig Sauer handgun - and near the trigger.
As a condition of the bond set on a felony substantial battery case filed one year ago, Schuman is prohibiting from possessing weapons.
A preliminary hearing in the bail jumping case, and a status conference on the substantial battery case, have been scheduled for May 8.
Oneida County circuit judge Mike Bloom set a $2,500 cash bail in the bail jumping case, however it was noted that Schuman has been in custody in Vilas County since January as he has been unable to post the $15,000 cash bond set by Vilas County circuit judge Daniel Overbey in that case.
Schuman, who has competed as a mixed martial arts fighter, was sentenced to 8 months in jail in June 2018 after standing trial in Vilas County on several charges related to domestic abuse. The jury convicted him of three misdemeanors but acquitted him on eight felony charges, according to court records. In that case, he was accused of strangling, kicking and punching a woman as well as threatening her with an AR-15.
In the Oneida County substantial battery case filed in May 2022, Schuman is accused of pressing a loaded gun into a woman's back and placing the weapon in her mouth. The complaint further alleges Schuman slammed the same woman's head against a car window on two occasions and knocked her out using the butt of a gun on another occasion.
In addition to three felonies, (substantial battery, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and false imprisonment), he is also charged with six misdemeanor counts related to alleged domestic abuse, according to that criminal complaint.
If convicted on all of the felony counts in all three counties, Schuman faces more than 70 years in prison.
