RIA to host curling event April 16
The sessions are set for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per person. Individuals can sign up and pay through the Rhinelander Ice Arena website at: https://rhinelanderice.sportngin.com/register/form/980270244.
"The game, so popular on TV during the Olympics, is played throughout Wisconsin, but this will be the first time it is offered to people in the Rhinelander area," event organizers stated in a press release.
The event is open to all ages and abilities. Players will learn to slide out of the "hack" (starting block), release a stone, sweep the stone down the ice, strategy and scoring, curling etiquette and the history of the game. Participants will need to bring clean tennis shoes to change into and wear on the ice, and dress in comfortable warm clothing and gloves. Kids under 12 need to bring a helmet.
Seniors or others who find sliding difficult will be taught how to deliver a stone using a push stick.
After having a great time on the ice, we will retire to the warm room where we will "broom stack," enjoying beverages and snacks.
"Don't worry, all these special curling terms will also be taught during this Learn To Curl," said Terri Gleason, one of the curling organizers.
"The volunteers teaching you have over 100 years of combined experience and are of all levels and have competed in world events and national events. They are seniors, high-performance athletes and club curlers,"Gleason added.
Gleason said Matt Thums of Wausau, captain of the U.S. Wheelchair Curling Team, will be on hand to help new curlers learn the game.
