Peter was born July 18, 1936, in Rhinelander, to Sigfreid and Gladys Hazelquist. He grew up in Rhinelander and remained a lifelong resident of Rhinelander.
Pete worked for the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation for 25 years and loved his job and his coworkers. He was proud of accomplishments he made regarding highways and roads in northern Wisconsin, such as surveying, building and signing Highway 51.
Peter was best known for his love of fishing, especially crappie fishing in the spring and he enjoyed fishing with his granddaughter, Amber. He loved his old swamp hole and made sure we all learned to fish. His gardening skills were amazing. He had the best "dirt" and his vegetables flourished under his skilled and loving care. He was so proud of his potatoes, onions and tomatoes, to name just a few, which he shared with everyone. If you ever stopped in for a visit, the first thing dad would ask is, are you hungry? He fed a lot of people on the front deck of his house over the years, sharing stories and laughs. His faith was strong, and it resulted in beautiful prayers to Jehovah, his God and he shared his hope of living forever in Paradise, right up to his death. His love for our mom, was endless, enduring, and timeless. He valued her deeply as she did him.
Peter is survived by his son, Mark, his daughters, Cherrie Hazelquist-Hagerman, Jill (Don) Smith, his grandchildren, Amber Stevens, Melissa Hagerman, Jake Hazelquist, Samantha Smith and great-granddaughter, Skylar.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean, brothers, William and Robert Hazelquist, and sisters, June, and Pauline Hazelquist.
A memorial talk will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Rhinelander. A luncheon will be served from 3-5 p.m. at the Pines Event Center, 5849 Forest Lane (off from Hwy. 47). Please feel welcome to attend one or both events to celebrate Peter.
