Ernie married Joyce Willitz in 1963 and together they had two cherished daughters, Tracy (Steve) Zangl and her children Haley (Jordan) Johnson and Zach (Courtney) Zangl, and Dana (Joe) Dennis and her children Kodiak and Mackinley. In 1977 Ernie and Joyce went their separate ways.
Later in life he met Joan Stafford Haag and they married in 1999, adding her family to the mix: Denise Mason, Steve (Renate) Haag, Brandon Haag, Sarah (Daniel) Carmichael, Campbell, Warren, and James (Rebecca Sannes) Haag, Katarina and Kristina.
Ernie was a salesman by trade and loved the fact that his career allowed him the luxury of travel. Whether at work or for pleasure, travel in the U.S. or abroad was a big part of Ernie's life.
After Joan's retirement, they moved to her hometown of Rhinelander and settled into a life on the lake. For many years Ernie and Joan were involved in community affairs and volunteered at the food pantry and became active at Trinity Lutheran Church and Learning in Retirement at Nicolet College.
Ernie had a passion for history and for several years it prompted him to share "The History of Christmas" with a local women's group, as well as "More People You Should Know About" in his L.I.R. class at Nicolet. He loved movies and was especially known for his "Ernie's Matinee Movies" that included popcorn and homemade chocolate chip cookies made by Joan. Joan was Ernie's right-hand man, and this was something they thoroughly enjoyed doing together. Ernie also enjoyed photography and sports, particularly the Packers and the Badgers. Of course he and Joan continued to travel and root those Badgers and Packers to victory. Go Pack Go! Let's go Badgers!
Ernie was the second of five children. He is survived by his two sisters Laurel Chapman and Janet (Harland) Furrer, beloved nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers Robert (Karen) and Willard (Willy) Schluter.
Visitation for Ernie will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. with a memorial service following at 11 a.m., all at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rhinelander. Reverend Timothy Vadis will be officiating. Interment will be in the Northland Memorial Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
