Rhinelander duo wins team welding competition at regional event
By Brett LaBore-
In welding, Rhinelander took top honors. Eighty students participated in the competition with the Rhinelander team of Jett Biolo and Ryan Morien emerging as the champions.
"Each area school brings six students to the welding preliminary competition in February/early March. They weld joints in all four welding positions and turn them in," RHS welding instructor Adam Schmidt explained. "Then Nicolet/the judges pick the two best welders from each school to compete in the welding portion during the competition day. Then on competition day, the two-man teams complete an individual and a team event."
Biolo and Morien had to work together to achieve victory.
"The first teammate has one hour to tack up and prepare the weldment and complete his/her four joints. The second teammate has to weld the weldment and complete the four joints," Schmidt explained. "Ryan prepared and tacked up the weldment and Jett welded it."
Individually, Biolo placed fifth and Morien finished 14th. Together, as a team, they took first overall.
"The team event is where they shined. They both used most of their time for setting up their teammate in the team event weldment," Schmidt said. "It obviously showed that these two gentlemen wanted to excel as a team, and it showed because they won the team event."
Biolo and Morien's hard work paid off in what turned out to be a celebratory day.
"It's nice when you have two young men who care about each other enough to put the team first and complete the individual portion second," Schmidt said. "I am very proud of these two guys. They work so hard throughout the year and over the past years building their skills."
