'Cold Justice' investigator endorses Schiek in Oneida County judge race

To the Editor:

Hello Citizens of Oneida County,

I wanted to take this opportunity to endorse Michael Schiek for Branch I Judge in Oneida County. Though I do not live in your county, I had the opportunity to come to your county in 2018 and work with District Attorney Schiek on the 1982 cold case involving the death of Barbara Mendez. I lead the Cold Justice Team which travels the country assisting agencies with cold cases.

As a former prosecutor, I know that these cases can be difficult. Besides the 12 cold cases I worked as part of the Harris County District Attorney's Office, I have now worked on over 100 cold cases with agencies from across the United States as part of the Cold Justice Team. These cases are very difficult to put together and often even with significant circumstantial evidence, many district attorneys do not follow through in the prosecutions of these cases.

Not only did District Attorney Schiek agree to the arrest of Robin Mendez in 2018 for the 1982 murder of Barbara Mendez after the work the Cold Justice Team did with the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, but he also followed through with the prosecution. There was no physical evidence such as DNA or fingerprints that would be helpful in this case. As I said during the show filmed in Oneida County, "DA Michael Schiek is my kind of prosecutor. He is not afraid of a circumstantial evidence case." Thirty-seven years after the murder of Barbara Mendez, District Attorney Schiek presented the case to Judge Falstad and Robin Mendez was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Barbara Mendez.

District Attorney Schiek fought through this difficult case and got the justice that Barbara's daughters had been waiting for over all those years. I believe that District Attorney Schiek will be a great Judge for the people of Oneida County.

He has the fortitude to make the tough decisions that judges make daily and I encourage you to vote for Michael Schiek on April 4, 2023.
