RHS sports recap: Thursday, March 23
The offense exploded in a big way for the RHS softball team on Thursday night. The Hodags scored 15 times in innings 4-6 to defeat Boyceville 16-1 in the opening game of the Danny Mac Softballl Classic in the Hodag Dome.
The Hodags broke a 1-1 tie with six runs in the fourth and then tacked on three more in the fifth and six in the sixth. Rhinelander collected 10 hits from nine different players and benefitted from 10 free bases via walks/hit batters in the contest.
After giving up an unearned run in the first, Addi DeMeyer picked up the win, scattering three hits while striking out 14.
Rhinelander (1-0, 0-0 Great Northern) plays two more games Friday to round out the event.
Track: RHS boys 3rd/13, girls 4th/12, Ashland Indoor
The Hodag track team finished in the top third of the field Thursday, taking third in the boys' division and fourth in the girls' division of the 13-team Ashland Indoor Invite.
Sophomore Truman Lamers led the way for Rhinelander, winning the triple jump and taking second in the high jump. Greyson Gremban was the runner up in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, Cody Ruetz took second in the 800 and Zach Germain was third in the long jump.
Freshman Aila Bergman had a big day, winning the girls' triple jump while taking third in both the 55- and 200-meter hurdles. Callie Hoerchler added a third in the long jump and the Hodags were third in the 4x400 with the team of Violet Biolo, Kyleah Hartman, Kayla Skubal and Millie Gruett.
The Hodag boys have picked up a meet in Merrill this coming Tuesday while the Hodag girls are idle until the GNC Indoor in Eagle River April 6.
