Rhinelander Kiwanis Club announces Winter Escapes top prize winners
The big cash winners on the night were Rose Fiocchi, who won the $2,500 grand prize, and Janice Wagner who won the $1,000 second prize, the release states.
The Kiwanis Club dedicated this year's event to Romelle Vandervest, the longtime Winter Escapes coordinator who passed away recently. A portion of the money raised will be used to fund a $1,500 annual Romelle Vandervest Community Service Scholarship that will be presented to a deserving Rhinelander High School senior who displays exceptional leadership and character in community service.
In addition to the Vandervest scholarship, Winter Escapes' proceeds fund two other annual $1,500 RHS scholarships as well as numerous community youth and family organizations and projects.
Past projects funded through Winter Escapes include the children's art classroom at ArtStart, the greenhouse at the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, purchase and installation of Pioneer Park playground equipment, construction of the outdoor basketball court at Central School, the hiking trail at the YMCA, and the remodeling of the training kitchen at Headwaters Inc.
In its 34-year history, Winter Escapes has raised over $450,000, all of which has been given back to the Rhinelander community.
