Judge Mary Burns was appointed Interim Judge of the Oneida County Circuit Court, Branch 1, to fill the position vacated by Judge Patrick O'Melia who retired August 1, 2022. Judge Burns is seeking the District 1 position in her own right.
Judge Burns was chosen from among many applicants for the interim position which continues through August 1, 2023. Her "excellence in the law, diverse experience, and lifetime of achievement" moved her ahead of other candidates, resulting in her appointment. She is noted for her experience, integrity and intelligence in legal matters, and before becoming a judge she worked in the Wisconsin Public Defender's Office for 14 years. At her investiture, she promised "non-partisan rulings always based on the law," and she has abided by this standard in her interim tenure.
I have known Judge Mary since 1990 when she was simply "Mary" and we worked together at the Rhinelander Daily News. In addition to her stellar legal achievements, I can affirm that she is a person of honesty and integrity who is sincerely committed to any task she is assigned.
She will also bring energy and enthusiasm to the job of circuit court judge.
Election to a circuit judge position should not, however, be a reward for work well done; it is an investment in the future of good government in the State of Wisconsin and, specifically, in Oneida County.
A vote for Judge Mary Burns for Judge of the Oneida County Circuit Court, Branch 1, on April 4 is a wise investment indeed
