Amid stiff competition at the 66th annual State Conservation and Environmental Awareness Speaking contest, Sugar Camp fifth-grade student Adisyn Schoeneck outshined her competitors and took home the first place trophy.

Sugar Camp Elementary School has consistently produced first place speakers at the county and regional level competitions, and Adisyn is the second in as many years to place first at the state competition, according to a press release announcing the accomplishment.

She presented her speech entitled, "The Living Fossil" on March 1 to a large group of conservation representatives at the Wisconsin Land+Water Conservation Association's State Conference at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

The contest aims to promote the conservation of natural resources and the protection or enhancement of environmental quality, the release states. Emphasis is placed on the subject as it relates to the locality or to Wisconsin.

Students compete at county and area competitions with winners moving on to the state competition.

It is tradition that if the state winner is an Oneida County student, they present their winning speech at an upcoming county board meeting.

Adisyn has been invited to give her speech at the April 18 board meeting. Her recorded speech from the regional event can also be found at https://www.oclw.org/2023-land--water-conservation-speaking--poster-contest.html.
