The annual Kiwanis Winter Escapes fundraiser, held Saturday, March 4 at Cabaret Cove, was "one singular sensation." The popular occasion is the only fundraiser event put on by the Rhinelander Kiwanis Club. The proceeds are used to fund local projects that directly benefit kids in the Rhinelander community.

Every year they sell out the alloted 500 tickets with people willing to donate more.

It was, as promised, "a night of suspense and high drama." Every ticket number was called for a chance to win one of dozens of prizes down to the final ticket for the grand prize of $2,500.

Local businesses donate hundreds of dollars in prizes including gift certificates and baskets full of goodies for this event.

As is tradition, Kiwanian Dave Havel served as master of ceremonies. With a carefully organized team spinning the drum, entering the data, calling the names, and organizing winner boards, each and every individual making a donation with their ticket purchase was called.

Havel was on the edge of the podium by ticket number 495 with his own name not having been called. Shortly thereafter the grand prize went to the 500th and final ticket drawn.

While the event includes opportunities to walk away with physical prizes, the true benefit to being a part of the event is the sense of camaraderie.

Kiwanis members who were at the event constantly spoke of the joy and sense of empowerment that being part of the organization brings.

"The group itself is fun and it's rewarding to give back to the community," noted Brandon Karaba, who has been a member of the club for over 15 years.

Projects made possible by the Winter Escapes fundraiser include the lighted outdoor basketball court at Central Elementary, the improved hiking trails at the YMCA, renovations to the food pantry's greenhouse, and current president, Stephanie Dahlquist's "pet" project: a splash pad at Pioneer Park.

Projects of this undertaking are large investments of time and funds through one annual fundraiser and local businesses and families that have a strong connection to community improvement for the children.

Karaba noted how "amazing it is that a community the size of Rhinelander can generate the type of interest and desire for funds that go into bettering the community for the kids."

Throughout the year Kiwanians meet and offer a platform for speakers to come and share about unique specialties.

Recently the speakers at the meetings included an officer from the police K-9 unit and one of the individuals who participated in the dog races held just a few weeks ago.

Winter Escapes welcomes all community members who want to enjoy a fun-filled night where social connections are built and community improvement is celebrated.

Brian Berns, who came to the event to learn more about Kiwanis, was amazed with the work of the club.

"I can't believe how many people came out to support our community through the Kiwanis Club," he said.

The dedicated members that make up the Rhinelander Kiwanis club are part of a larger community of clubs worldwide.

Kiwanians represent over 80 countries and have over 550,000 members.

The organization offers opportunities for members to explore unique ways to serve the needs of children, one child and one community at a time.
