Bernie graduated from the Rhinelander High School in 1981. After his schooling he worked in the woods with his brother Jeff before getting into maintenance. He worked for the Friendly Village Nursing Home, the Oneida County Courthouse and numerous other properties in the Rhinelander area.
Bernie was a member of the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ in Rhinelander. He and his wife Cathy were instrumental in the startup of the local ATV club and were charter members. He was a Ham radio operator and he enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, riding his Harley and watching westerns. Bernie was creative and he enjoyed making things out of both wood and steel. His greatest joy came from times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
On Sept. 1, 2007 Bernie married the former Catherine Panetti and she survives him. He is also survived by his daughter Melisa (Jason) Williamson, his sons Andrew Wanty and Nicholas Wanty, his stepson Adam (Amy Gray) Weingarten, his grandchildren Olivia, Noah, Lakendrah, Chloe, Ella Rose and Owen, his sisters Jessie (George) Neuber, Jill (Tony) Schroeder and Tina Wanty, brother Jeff Wanty, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation for Bernie will be held from 10 a.m. to noon with memorial services following at noon on Friday, March 24, 2023 at the Carlson Funeral Home. You may leave your private condolences for his family at www.carlsonfh.com.
