Montello man charged with sexual assault, exposing child to harmful material
By River News Staff-
Adam E. Elder made his initial appearance on the charges on Tuesday afternoon before circuit judge Michael Bloom.
Citing the aggravated nature of the allegations and the defendant's tenuous ties to the community, Oneida County district attorney Mike Schiek requested a $20,000 cash bond.
The victim's father, who was allowed to address the issue of bond under the protections authorized by Marsy's Law, asked the court to "throw the book" at Elder.
"I brought this man into my house. I loved him like a brother. My children loved him like an uncle and he just took advantage of that. I don't want him to do this again to anybody," the man said.
Bloom ultimately granted the state's request for a $20,000 cash bond and scheduled an adjourned initial appearance for the afternoon of Thursday, March 9, after this edition was scheduled to go to press.
According to the criminal complaint, Elder was staying in the home of a friend while in the Rhinelander area for work purposes. The complaint alleges he sent the friend's young teenage child a series of text messages, using explicit and graphic language, describing his preferences related to various parts of the female anatomy.
He is also accused of getting into bed with the child during the early morning hours of Feb. 24 and touching her inappropriately.
If convicted of all five felonies, Elder faces a maximum sentence of 54 years in prison.
