$25,000 cash bond set for inmate who missed deadline for return from furlough
By River News Staff-
According to a criminal complaint filed on March 6, Owen E. Graveen received a furlough on March 3 after a family member was seriously injured in an automobile accident.
According to Oneida County district attorney Mike Schiek, Graveen returned to the jail 27 hours after he was required to return.
Upon his return, he tested positive for methamphetamine, cocaine and THC, the prosecutor reported.
"Based upon that information and the aggravated nature of this offense, I do believe a significant cash bond would be appropriate," Schiek told judge Michael Bloom during a bail hearing in Oneida County Circuit Court Monday afternoon.
Given his chance to speak, Graveen thanked the court for allowing the furlough, calling the time he had with family members "priceless", and apologized to the court for returning to the jail late.
"I'm sorry I didn't come back when I was supposed to," he told the judge.
According to court records, Graveen was in custody on a pending burglary/theft case involving stolen snowmobiles when he requested the furlough.
A $3,000 cash bond was set in that case.
He also has an open possession of methamphetamine case in Vilas County, according to court records.
The charges filed Monday are Escape-Criminal Arrest, which is a Class H felony, felony bail jumping and misdemeanor bail jumping.
If convicted of the two new felonies, Graveen faces up to 12 years in prison.
An adjourned initial appearance on the bail jumping and escape charges is set for 2:30 p.m. March 27.
