Lamers, Treder earn All-GNC nods for Lady Hodags
Senior Ava Lamers was a unanimous first-team selection on this year's squad while junior Lily Treder received honorable mention. The pair were the two leading scorers for a Rhinelander team that finished tied for third in the GNC with Antigo, sporting a 7-5 league mark.
"I think teams knew the top two scorers on our team were Lily and Ava," coach Ryan Clark said. "Some of the games, like Antigo, they'd do a triangle-and-2 to try to take Lily and Ava out of the game."
Lamers was the GNC's scoring champion this year, averaging 23.0 points per game. She was also tops for Rhinelander in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and steals (1.9 spg) during league play and was tied for second on the team in assists (2.8 apg.)
It marked Lamers' second appearance on the all-conference list. She received honorable mention for the Hodags last year.
"On Ava's behalf, I really didn't have to say anything," Clark said regarding Lamer's nomination for an all-conference award. "I think all the coaches knew. Credit to her, she had a phenomenal season, led the conference in scoring. I don't know if there was a game where she wasn't face guarded or double-teamed. She had a lot of defensive attention on her, but she did fantastic.
"She's very well respected in the conference by other coaches and by other players. She's such a great teammate. She had great sportsmanship. She does a great job and is a very well-respected, well-liked young lady."
Treder finished seventh overall in scoring in the GNC this year, averaging 10.8 points per game. She was also tied for third in 3-pointers made (22) and fourth in overall field goal percentage (.472).
"I thought she had a pretty good year and, at the end of the year, I thought she played really well," Clark said. "Lily grew a lot from her sophomore year - scoring and then post defense for us because she's one of our few forwards on defense. I'm hoping this helps her kind of springboard to a stronger year next year where she's a little more confident, sees herself as one of the top players in the conference and makes a nice, big jump up."
All five first-team members were unanimous with Lamers joined by Antigo's Sophie Schlieve, Lakeland sisters Kristina and Julianna Ouimette and Mosinee's Taelyn Jirschele. Coincidentally, the five were also the top five scorers in the league this year.
"I think all five of them are clearly the best five players in the conference," Clark said. "Those five, Ava included, are really good players."
The Ouimette sisters shared GNC player of the year honors while their mother, Melissa, was voted the conference's coach of the year after guiding Lakeland to an undefeated conference title, with an average margin of victory of 43.7 points in league games.
Lakeland's Lily Fortier and Saylor Timmerman, Medford's Bryn Fronk and Brooke Rudolph and Mosinee's Britt Fitzgerald earned second-team honors. Twelve players received honorable mention by earning at least one all-conference vote.
