Bednarz places 48th at state bowling tournament
Bednarz rolled a 573 series to finish tied for 48th in a field of 106 bowlers in the preliminary rounds of the state tournament at Dale's Weston Lanes.
Only the top 25% of the field and ties -which worked out to 27 bowlers this year - advanced to Saturday's semifinal round. Bednarz finished 43 pins out of a transfer spot.
"I feel like I did the best that I could," Bednarz told the River News afterward. "It's hard to describe, but I was happy I made it in."
Bednarz, representing the Rhinelander/Three Lakes/Tomahawk club bowling team, opened his night with a 190 game, "which wasn't bad," he said. "It was first game, not always the best. I thought that was a good start."
Bednarz followed with a 200 in his second game, but dropped to a 183 in his final game. He said he was happy that he remained consistent under the pressure and challenging lane conditions of state.
"The lanes, they were weird. I wasn't comfortable playing that line, but I managed," he said. "I almost figured, and I was actually getting it. That was the key moment for me."
The performance was an improvement for Bednarz over his sophomore year when he rolled a 530 series and finished 68th in a field of 97. He missed last year's state tournament but got in this year thanks to having the eighth-best season long fill percentage in WiHSBC District 9 play.
Bednarz was fifth entering the last day, and the final two dual meets, of district play. He overcame a slow start in which he filled only 15 of his first 23 frames. He filled his final 13.
"I'm waiting for a realizational moment like, 'Oh man, I'm going to miss this," he said after finishing his high school career. "It was fun. I enjoyed it. I would totally do it again."
