Junior Will Gretzinger received second-team honors and senior Kyle Brown took home honorable mention for a Rhinelander team that finished in the middle of the pack, fourth in the GNC with a 6-6 mark in league play.
Gretzinger, who averaged 15.7 points per game overall in the regular season, was fifth in the GNC in scoring as of Monday night, averaging 16.6 point per game in league play. He was also fourth in the conference in 3-pointers made (27).
"For Will to get second team I thought was really impressive. He beat out a 1,000-point scorer from Northland Pines (Griffin Stiemke)," Hodag coach Derek Lemmens said. "He had some big games against teams and teams knew where our bread was buttered. They really gave him a lot of respect and props."
Brown averaged 9.6 points per game in the GNC and had one more triple than Gretzinger, ranking third overall in the conference.
"Kyle, being honorable mention, (he and Will) had to do so much of the scoring for us - especially between injuries and all the things," Lemmens said. "They really stepped up big for us this season, and it was nice to see them get noticed for it."
This year's all-conference team bares a strong resemblance to last year's. Medford's Logan Baumgartner, Mosinee's Davin Stoffel and Northland Pines' Nolan Lurvey all reprised their roles on the first team, with Baumgartner earning player of the year honors after splitting the award with Lurvey last year. Medford's Tanner Hraby and Northland Pines' Gabe Smith jumped from honorable mention last year to join the three returnees on the first team.
Lakeland's Will Fortier, Mosinee's Keagan Jirschele and Northland Pines' Ryan Muench landed on the second team for the second year in a row. Gretzinger and Medford's Charlie Kleist rounded out the second team.
"It was such a talented conference this year," Lemmens said. "There were some guys that, most years, would be first-teamers and they were second team and honorable mention. It was really just a talented group this year."
Medford's Ryan Brown was named coach of the year after leading the Raiders to an undefeated conference title.
The All-GNC girls' basketball team was released Thursday morning, after deadline for today's print edition. Rhinelander's Ava Lamers received unanimous first-team honors and Lily Treder received honorable mention. More will be published in Tuesday's River News.
