RHS sports recap: Tuesday, Feb. 28
The Rhinelander High School boys' basketball team cruised in its WIAA tournament opener Tuesday night, defeating Ashland 73-49 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Without second-leading scorer Kyle Brown (illness), the Hodags spread the wealth around, with six different players scoring at least eight points.
Truman Lamers, in his first game back since mid-January (knee) scored 14 off the bench to help lead Rhinelander. Will Gretzinger also had 14 and freshman Devon Feck had 13.
After trailing in the early going, the Hodags used a 10-2 run to take the lead for good with midway through the first half. Rhinelander led 31-25 at halftime and started the second half on a 17-8 run to pull away.
Xander Parduhn led Ashland with 17 points while Derek Ollanketo had 16.
Rhinelander (9-15) will face top-seeded Fox Valley Lutheran Friday night in Appleton in a regional semifinal contest.
