Hoyt Dantoin scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth as Rhinelander broke a 5-all tie and went on to defeat Eagle River-3 8-5 at Stafford Field. The Hodags snapped a five-game losing streak, four of which have come in league play.
Rhinelander responded after digging a 3-0 hole in the first inning and lead 5-3 after two innings. Single runs in the third and the fifth brought Eagle River level before the Hodags' responded.
Dantoin drew a one-out walk in the fifth and moved to third before Aden Flannery laid down a bunt that allowed him to score.
Rhinelander tacked on two more in the sixth as Zack Webster singled, stole second and got to third on a Ryley Hull bunt. Webster then beat a throw home on a Mason Schmidt bunt to make it 7-5. Schmidt got to second after a Declan Adams walk before stealing third and scoring on an overthrow.
Facing a 3-0 deficit in the first, the Hodags got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Adams walked, stole second, got to third on an overthrow and then scored on a wild pitch.
A big second inning then put Rhinelander in front. The Hodags loaded the bases with one out in the inning on a Tyler Chariton double, a Johnny Turek fielder's choice and a walk by Dantoin. Flannery was then awarded a base due to catcher's interference, allowing Chariton to score. Turek scored on a passed ball and Allen Wisnewski then hit a two-run single to make it 5-3.
The Hodags wound up with seven hits by seven different players - Josh Willoughby, Chariton, Wisnewski, Chandler Servent, Schmidt, Webster and Hull.
Servent pitched two innings for Rhinelander, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Schmidt logged three innings of relief to get the win, giving up two runs without a hit. A hit batsman reached and scored in the third and an error led to a run in the fifth. Schmidt struck out three and walked nobody. Adams pitched the final two innings to earn the save. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two.
Rhinelander (2-4) continues its tour of Eagle River this week. The team played Eagle River-2 Monday night in a game that concluded after press time for today's edition and will return to Northland Pines High School Wednesday evening to face Eagle River-1.
Rhinelander's Prep League team was scheduled to face Crandon Thursday night. Details from that game were not provided prior to press time. The Hodags (5-1) will travel to Phillips on Tuesday before facing league-leading Tomahawk-2 in a doubleheader at Stafford Field on Thursday.
