JWMS student wins national writing contest

Riley Jae Johnson, a recent graduate of James Williams Middle School, has written an award-winning short story.

The GFWC Rhinelander Woman's Club announced this week that Johnson's story "The Duende" was chosen as the winner of a national writing contest sponsored by the GFWC.

The announcement was made during the recent GFWC annual convention in Louisville, Ky.

"The Duende," is a spin-off adventure featuring characters from the novel, "Summer of the Mariposas," by Guadalupe Garcia McCall.

Johnson read "Summer of the Mariposas" this last school year in an eighth grade English Language Arts class. taught by Rachel Sieker and Kristin Higgins.

Johnson and her teachers were honored during Monday evening's school board meeting.
