Vilas County visitor spending tops $288 million in 2022
Tourism is Vilas County's largest industry, supporting 2,109 jobs in 2022, and county businesses benefitted from total business sales just shy of $363 million, up 7.3% from 2021. Visitor spending in the county accounted for $24.9 million in state and local taxes last year alone.
Statewide, visitor spending reached $23.7 billion in 2022, a 13% increase over 2021, besting the previous record of $22.2 billion spent in 2019. Tourism accounted for 174,000 plus jobs and $1.5 billion in state and local taxes collected.
"We are thrilled to see families returning generation after generation, as well as so many new folks exploring our area for the first time. In fact, my husband, who is now a Northwoods resident, is a third generation traveler to the area," said Collette Sorgel, director of Vilas County tourism and publicity. "Every dollar spent directly improves the lives of everyone who lives and works in Vilas County. Thanks to our strong partnerships with Vilas County communities, businesses and trail clubs, and the hard work of all the people who work to welcome visitors, we are stronger than ever. We outperformed our best year by $20 million dollars - a success story we're so proud of and grateful for."
